How long does it take to get good?
Focus on enjoying and feeling the music today and one day you will wake up and be "good". Frankly, learning music is so variable that it is hard to predict. Some people learn some things really quickly but then take a long time to learn other things.
What is the proper way to hold the guitar?
Please see lesson one for general details. Remember - there is no one correct way, it is the principle that is important. Spine relatively straight, body relaxed and wrists should be bent as little as possible.
How do I get a good guitar?
It depends on your budget and how sure you are that you will keep playing. If you know you are going to keep playing, and you know what kind of music you will be playing, you should get the best guitar and gear possible when you start. If you know someone who know a lot about guitars, they can help you find a guitar.
If you are not sure if you will keep playing, or if you want an electric or an acoustic, you should rent or borrow a friends.
- There are no cracks.
- The neck is not warped.
- It is in tune. Use a tuner to check all the different notes on the guitar. Sometimes cheaper guitars are not in very good tune for all notes.
- It feels good holding it.
- If it is electric, the electronics are good.
- It sounds good.
- You like it.
- You trust the people who are selling it.
How do I restring a guitar?
It depends on the guitar. Do not take all the strings off at the same time if you have an acoustic! The neck needs constant tension. Please see lesson one for general details. We recommend some types of strings in the tools section.
How do I play a certain style of music?
Listen to a lot that style of music. Figure of what the drums and bass are doing. They usually make up a lot of the feel of the music. Use your ear, take lessons, buy books, talk to people and be patient.
