3 Great Ways to Start Improvising in a Classic Jazz Style (Podcast #2)

Would you love to improvise in the vein of classic jazz like Oscar Peterson and Miles Davis?

Here’s 3 great ways that I believe will help aspiring jazz musicians!

And these are tips I still use after studying this musical genre for almost 30 year!

Play simple pentatonic melodies!

Focus on Groove!

Get started improvising in jazz playing pentatonic melodies over minor vamps (like So What) and the blues
  1. Practice & play simple pentatonic melodies (or the Dorian mode) over minor chord vamps.
  2. Practice & play simple pentatonic melodies over blues changes
  3. Focus on groove!

Most beginners (at least I did) hear “jazz music” and think complexity.

But the secret for most beginners (and really most musicians, imho) is to play extra simple with groove.

The “secret” to solid jazz improvisation:

play extra simple, with groove.

especially for beginners, imho
