About Me!

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by Guitar Kitchen!

Guitar Kitchen started as a fun idea for a website about 18 years or so.

Over the years, I’ve been adding guitar & music lessons, ideas about music, and other things that guitarist & musicians might find important and/or interesting.

My Musical Experiences

Gigging in DC

With the exception of the last year or so, I’ve been in gigging in the DC area for about 15 years or so.

I’ve mostly played straight-ahead and old-school jazz. Also, different Latin projects, a bit of reggae, funk, RnB, country, hip-hop, Indian Classical, Western Classical (off the top of my head). And a really fun, high-energy ska-rock band and an instrumental pop group!

Please check out some of the music on YouTube (see below or check out my channel GuitarKitchen).

Learning Guitar

As of winter 2021, I’ve been blessed with playing guitar for a little over 31 years!

Adventures in Multi-Instrumentalism

I love guitar! But I also am always dreaming about other instruments, too. I wouldn’t say I am true multi-instrumentalist – I only really play guitar on gigs, etc. But maybe someday I will be!

Great ways to learn music - learn from the greats, practice makes progress, play what you sing, sing what you play, enjoy the musical journey!
4 greats to ways to enjoy learning and playing music!

Other than guitar, I played the French Horn for a little bit, the drums for many years (though I’ve been getting a little more serious about drums and percussion in the last 5-10 years).

And I’ve been experimenting on the keys since I was a little kid.

Some day I do hope to play the Goldberg Variations. Maybe in 10-20 years? (Bach’s 350th year birthday will be March 31, 2035 – hopefully by then!)

And in spring 2020, I finally took the plunge and started the road to playing the violin and viola (and cello) in tune 🙂

And last, but not least, I’ve been slowly honing my singing skills. One of these days I may actually have something to sing for you all!

Practice Makes Perfect Progress!

I’ve found that I have the most fun and make decently good progress by just intending to practice 5 minutes a day.

For piano, drums, singing and violin/viola, I try to invent a 5 minute practice routine that’s fun and will help me learn something.

For example, I’ve been playing drums for 5 minutes a day for along time.

But since about February, I’ve been making 5 minute backing tracks where I play drums for 5 minutes and piano for 5 minutes (over the drum track)

For guitar, I basically do the same thing, but since I’ve been playing longer, the progress isn’t usually so immediately apparent. But the principle still applies!

All the best to everyone!
